Timing is everything when it comes to orthodontic treatment.  Knowing what to expect in advance can help alleviate any stress or confusion with the journey.  So we’ve put together a helpful outline of the orthodontic appointment stages you can expect at Sawyer Creek Orthodontics; from the initial consultation all the way to final retainers.

Step 1: Start with a complimentary consultation

First in line for the orthodontic appointment stages is setting up an initial consultation.  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children are seen by an orthodontist by age 7.  At the initial consultation, x-rays, photographs and an exam are completed.

Dr. Maslowski or Dr. Michel will examine your child for baby teeth falling out early or late and extra or missing teeth.  They’ll also look for crowded teeth, unnatural spacing or teeth erupting out of place as well as teeth out of alignment, including crooked teeth or teeth that don’t meet when biting.

Step 2: Orthodontic treatment or observation

Dr. Maslowski or Dr. Michel will discuss any recommended orthodontic treatment during the initial consultation.  They’ll explain all treatment details, appointments and financial estimates.

If no treatment is necessary, your child is scheduled for orthodontic observation appointments.

Orthodontic observation appointments, or recall visits, are short exams scheduled every 6 to 12 months to monitor growth and development.  Any harmful oral habits, such as thumb sucking, will be monitored and suggestions are made to help eliminate any habits prior to starting orthodontic treatment.

There is no charge for observation appointments.  When your child is nearing the time for orthodontic treatment, we’ll let you know the anticipated timeline and cost for braces.  Dr. Maslowski and Dr. Michel strive to give you at least a year advance notice of when treatment will occur to allow for planning of insurance and financial arrangements.

Step 3: Retention

Retainers are necessary to hold teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment is complete.  Our office will schedule your child to come in for a few appointments in the year following treatment to check on retainer compliance.  Dr. Maslowski and Dr. Michel will determine if retainers are fitting properly and the results of orthodontic treatment are stable.
